Compost Workshop

Friday, April 21st was our first Compost Workshop at Gurrie Middle School. It was also the first time students from Gurrie and Highlands Middle School collaborated in the garden. Rose Naseef, mother to Gurrie students and S.C.A.R.C.E. compost educator, led an interactive lesson that introduced students to the history, process, and benefits of composting our soil. After the presentation students were able to get hands-on with vermi-composting and a soil prep session in the Gurrie vegetable garden.

This was a productive step towards non-competitive school collaboration between our neighboring school communities and the benefits are still being shared. Gurrie and Highlands traded composters to see which (tumbler or traditional) composter is more productive at our schools, teachers shared valuable information, and S.C.A.R.C.E. was able to continue improving our communities with their incredible mission. We'll be off to S.C.A.R.C.E.'s "Get Your Garden Growing Green" event Friday, May 6th to get more compost for our garden kickoff in late May.
